Salivary biomarkers related to Alzheimer's disease
Kho Hong-Seop

Abstract
There have been several publications regarding salivary biomarkers related to Alzheimer's disease. These studies have been performed based on the following scientific knowledge: 1) salivary flow is regulated and influenced by cranial nerves, 2) cerebrospinal biomarkers for Alzheimer's disease are also expressed in the salivary glands, and 3) the anatomical proximity of orofacial structures to brain and their probable communications through cranial nerves and blood vessels. The reported biomarkers were salivary acetylcholinesterase, beta amyloid, tau, lactoferrin, and trehalose. These results showed promising possibilities for future clinical use, though the number of studies is too small and there is still inconsistency in the reported results. Further studies are necessary based on the concepts of multi-analyte system and/or point-of-care.
